MUCM stands for ‘Managing Uncertainty in Complex Models’.
-
The project is funded by Research Councils UK (RCUK), the body responsible for funding research across all the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities in the UK. Whereas most research grants are awarded by specific research councils under the RCUK umbrella (for instance, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council or the Medical Research Council), MUCM is one of a small number of projects funded directly by RCUK because of their potential impact across the remits of all the councils.
-
The total budget of MUCM exceeds 2 million pounds.
-
The project runs from 1 June 2006 to 30 September 2010.
-
MUCM is managed from the University of Sheffield as a collaboration between 5 universities – the University of Sheffield, Aston University, the University of Durham, the London School of Economics and the University of Southampton.
-
MUCM brings together leading researchers in the field of model uncertainty – Professor Tony O’Hagan (Sheffield, Project Leader), Dr Peter Challenor (Southampton), Dr Dan Cornford (Aston), Professor Michael Goldstein (Durham), Dr Jeremy Oakley (Sheffield), Dr Jonathan Rougier (Durham) and Professor Henry Wynn (LSE). (see People & Structure)
-
The research team will comprise these 7 established researchers plus 7 postdoctoral research associates and 4 PhD students. A part-time Project Manager will coordinate budgets, meetings, workshops, etc., and will be a vital member of the project team. The whole team will meet at least twice a year.
-
MUCM has an external advisory board comprising model developers, model users and other international experts in model uncertainty. Organisations represented include the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, Rolls Royce plc, GlaxoSmithKline and the Health Protection Agency
